More than two hundred organs stand in the houses of worship of the Evangelical Church A.B. in Romania. From the small positive with few stops and a short octave of the 17th century to the symphonic giant organ of the 20th century with thousands of pipes, a wealth of different instruments has survived – a few in their original state, many altered more or less over the decades.
A fascinating variety of organ cases (façades) with carved, painted and gilded ornaments bears witness to the organ-building tradition of Transylvania. Organ music inspired by these instruments has also come down to us from every stylistic period of the last four centuries.
This organ landscape has changed greatly in recent decades. Besides many instruments that could be repaired or restored, there are almost as many decaying before our eyes.
This organ registry sets out to document these changes and the present condition of all the instruments.
Our thanks go to the Faculty of Music of the West University of Timișoara and to Prof. Dr. Felician Roșca for their help in starting this organ registry. Part of the data was taken from the website www.monografia-orgilor.uvt.ro.
